Prospect Potent Potables - Nieuwenhuis, Diamondbacks, Gennett

• There have been many conflicting opinions as to where Kirk Nieuwenhuis fits into the Mets future outfield plans, and Michael Baron of MetsBlog.com takes a look at answering that very question, who also notes that Wilmer Flores is coming on strong towards the end of the winter season.
• The Diamondbacks system is so deep right now that their Double-A rotation last season had prospects one through five, notes Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com, and that group should make the jump to Triple-A next season.
• In a very weak Brewers farm system, Scooter Gennett has established himself as a legitimate prospect, notes Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com.

Prospect Action - 11/2/11

Arizona Fall League

• A's OF Grant Green led his Desert Dogs to an 11-8 victory, finishing just a single short of the cycle while driving in three runs.  Reds closer Brad Boxberger picked up his third AFL save.
• The Javelinas pounded out 11 hits, including multi-hit days for Brewers 2B Scooter Gennett, Padres 3B Jedd Gyorko, and Cardinals SS Ryan Jackson.

Dominican Winter League

• Rockies C Wilin Rosario hit his 5th home run of the winter, leading his Aguilas Cibaenas to an 8-1 victory, and tying him for the league lead, and adding to his league leading RBI total.
• Nationals 1B Chris Marrero drove in two runs in the first inning, which proved to be enough for his Tigres del Licey.

Venezuelan Winter League

• Freddy Galvis returned to the lineup, and the Phillies SS drove in three runs with a triple in the sixth inning.

 

 

Prospect Action - 10/26/11

Arizona Fall League

• Mariners P Danny Hultzen gave up just one earned run (on a solo homer) in 3 2/3 innings, striking out five in his Javelinas 7-6 loss.  A's OF Grant Green hit a home run in the 10th inning that proved to be the game winner.
• Pirates P Gerrit Cole also tossed 3 2/3 innings, allowing just an unearned run and striking out four, picking up his second win of the AFL season.  Twins OF Aaron Hicks hit his third homer of the AFL season, a three-run shot, in support of Cole.  After a horrendous start to the fall, Nats OF Bryce Harper has now hit in seven straight games, including a three-run shot yesterday, his second of the fall season.
• The Rafters hammered out 15 hits, including multi-hit games by Astros OF Jay Austin, Diamondbacks OF Adam Eaton, Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado, and Dodgers OF Kyle Russell, among others.

Dominican Winter League

• Wilin Rosario hit his fourth homer of the winter season, leading his Aguilas Cibaenas to a 5-2 victory.

Venezuelan Winter League

• Brewers OF Caleb Gindl hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning, to spoil a shutout, but it wasn't enough, as his Leones del Caracas fell 5-2.

 

 

Prospect Action - Weekend Wrap-Up

Saturday, October 22nd

Arizona Fall League

• The Solar Sox recorded a 9-2 victory behind the bat of Cubs SS Junior Lake, who's 4-for-5 day improved his AFL batting average to .379.
• A strong start for Braves P Sean Gilmartin (1 ER in 5 IP) and the first AFL home run for Royals 2B Christian Colon both went to waste as the Saguaros fell 10-3 to the Javelinas.
• Multi-hit days by Giants prospects Gary Brown and Brandon Crawford were enough to overcome A's OF Michael Choice's 5th home run of the AFl season.

Dominican Winter League

• Pirates OF Starling Marte led a 12-hit attack for the Leones del Escogido with three of his own, while Nationals OF Eury Perez added two RBI's and a stolen base in their 6-2 victory.
• A three-run homer by Rockies C Wilin Rosario helped lead his Aguilas Cibaenas to a 14-2 victory.
• Yankees P Pat Vinditte allowed his first runs of the winter, giving up two solo home runs in his one inning of work.

Venezuelan Winter League

• Two doubles by Twins OF Joe Benson helped lead his Tigres de Aragua to a 6-1 victory.
• The Navegantes del Magallanes were led to their 5-4 victory behind the three-hit performance of Mariners 3B Francisco Martinez, as well as a scoreless inning and a third of relief by Rangers P Tanner Scheppers and a scoreless 11th inning by Twins P Deolis Guerra.
• Rangers P Wilfredo Boscan got his first loss of the winter season, allowing four earned runs in 2 2/3 innings of work.

 

Sunday, October 23rd

Dominican Winter League

• Wilin Rosario hit his second homer in as many nights, but his Aguilas Cibaenas fell 11-6 nonetheless.
• Rays P Alex Colome threw a scoreless inning to finish off the Toros del Este.

Venezuelan Winter League

• Brewers OF Caleb Gindl hit a three-run homer to help lead his Leones del Caracas to a 10-5 victory.

 

 

Prospect Action - 10/20/11

Arizona Fall League

• The Desert Dogs won a 10-9 barnburner, thanks to a 3-for-4 day at the plate for Blue Jays OF Anthony Gose.  Brewers 2B Scooter Gennett collected three more hits in the loss, but was outdone by Padres 3B Jedd Goryko, who went 5-for-5.  Brewers P Cody Scarpetta got the start for the Javelinas, but gave up seven earned runs and failed to record an out.
• Pirates P Gerrit Cole notched his first AFL win, throwing three scoreless innings for the Solar Sox, notes David Heck of MLB.com.
• Saguaros pitching walked seven batters in the game, leading to their 7-2 loss, despite three hits from Royals OF Wil Myers.

Mexican Pacific League

• Yankees P Pat Venditte threw a scoreless inning for a second straight day, helping his Aguilad de Mexicali defeat Angels SS Andrew Romine, who went 0-for-4 on the day.
