Braves' Prospect Schafer Shines on Opening Day

Atlanta Braves centerfield prospect Jordan Schafer became the 99th player in Major League Baseball history to homer in his first at-bat, en route to a 2-3 day in his debut, as the Braves rolled over the reigning World Champion Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday night.

Schafer earned the starting job in a Spring Training battle with Josh Anderson (who has since been traded to Detroit) and is one game in to proving that the Braves made the right decision.

• The Atlanta Braves have a tough decision regarding their centerfield position, choosing between the out-of-options Josh Anderson and, as David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports, the red hot Jordan Schafer, who is making the Braves' decision tougher and tougher each day.

The Atlanta Braves have two major position battles taking place - 5th starter and centerfield - and in both instances, youth could be served.

In centerfield, Jordan Schafer is batting .419 for the spring and has stolen 4 bases.  Nothing has been said, but his performance has to stand for something, even if it is in Spring Training.

Tommy Hanson, on the other hand, has the backing of the man who might have more say than anyone.  As David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports, manager Bobby Cox has had many kind words regarding his stud youngster.  His odds are still longer than some others, but the fact that he's still getting long looks starting spring games after St. Patrick's Day says something for the significant look he's getting this spring.
