Jenrry Mejia, the New York Mets top prospect, has a completely torn MCL in his right elbow, reports Cash Kruth of MLB.com. The hard-throwing righty is seeking a second opinion, but, as Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com reports, Mejia will likely need surgery.
For more on Mejia, there's David Lennon of Newsday.com, Dan Martin of the New York Post, and Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, who notes that Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen was wary of such an injury when he pushed for Mejia to remain a reliever during spring training.
If Mejia has surgery, he will likely be out for a full year.
