Ryan Westmoreland, the Boston Red Sox' most highly rated, yet oft-injured, prospect, will be out indefinitely because of brain surgery, reports John Tomase of the Boston Herald. The team did not announce how long Westmoreland will be away from baseball, likely because it is too early to set a timetable.
Westmoreland was a 5th round pick who dropped because of a strong college commitment, but was swayed by the Red Sox $2 million offer. He is considered a 5-tool player and potential 30-30 player. While his surgery could easily cause Westmoreland to miss the entire 2010 season, assuming he is able to make a full recovery, it should have no affect on the tools that make him so highly touted of a prospect.
MLBPW wishes Ryan Westmoreland a speedy and healthy recovery.
