Every time someone warns the Braves of the dangers of rushing Jason Heyward to the majors, like Bill Sanders of the Atlanta Journal Constitution tried to do, the kid goes out and gives the team another reason to keep him around.
This time, it was a very loud reason, as the 20-year-old prospect drilled a 420-foot home run, reports Mark Bowman of MLB.com. The bomb was Heyward's first home run of the spring, which had been about the only thing missing from the show he's been putting on since reporting to camp. Heyward is hitting over .400 and has shown exceptional plate discipline and an ability to avoid striking out.
The Braves still have not made an official decision on Heyward, but manager Bobby Cox is perhaps his biggest fan. The offense-starved Braves would have to show impressive restraint to send Heyward back to the minors to start the year.
