Jeremy Hellickson is scheduled to appear in today's exhibition game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees, reports Bill Chastain of MLB.com. It will be the the young right-hander's first appearance of the Spring, and his first action against major leaguers for the Rays.
Hellickson is not competing for a roster spot with the Rays this spring, but a strong showing today could be a good first step towards showing management that he's ready when needed. Hellickson has a half-season of Triple-A under his belt and on most teams would be in the discussion for the back end of the rotation, but the Rays already have 6 starters competing for 5 spots in their rotation. Hellickson will head back to Triple-A Durham to begin the year, but should be the first pitcher recalled if a starter is needed during the season.
