Fernando Martinez further supported his case to be in the Mets' Opening Day lineup with a 3-run home run on Wednesday, reports Ken Belson of the New York Times. With Jason Bay in right field, and Jeff Francoeur in left, the Mets have been looking at Martinez, Angel Pagan, and newly acquired Gary Matthews, Jr. as their possible center fielders. Martinez is the youngest of the three (only 21-years-old) and will probably begin the year in Triple-A, but is also having the best spring.
This opinion has been re-enforced by Mets' manager Jerry Manuel who has implied that Martinez would be a tough fit on the big league roster, reports Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News.
