There is little argument with that Kansas City Royals 1B prospect Eric Hosmer struggled in his first full professional season in 2009. But were his struggles as bad as they seemed? Or were they more of a failure to live up to expectations that had been set too high? The blog Royals Review takes a crack at answering that question with an interesting (albeit biased) comparison of Hosmer's 2009 season to his fellow prep 1st rounders from last year's draft.
Expectations were lofty for Hosmer, the 3rd overall pick in the 2009 draft, as he entered his first full season, but problems with his vision, a hand injury, and spending time in Class A Wilmington, a notorious pitcher's park, combined to make for a rough season for the young lefty. It wouldn't be surprising to see the Royals let Hosmer take another crack at the Midwest League to get his confidence up before sending him back to Wilmington.
