The news that the Detroit Tigers would not be offering incumbent 2B Placido Polanco arbitration, all but ending his days with the team, is essentially an announcement that the Opening Day 2B will instead be prospect Scott Sizemore, reports Lynn Henning of the Detroit News. Sizemore batted .308/.389/.500 while splitting time between Double and Triple-A in 2009, but broke his leg during the off-season. The Tigers anticipate Sizemore being ready for Spring Training.
If Sizemore does gain the starting 2B position, the Tigers will feature an infield with two players from Virginia Commonwealth University (3B Brandon Inge is also a former Ram.)
