In a post-trade deadline blockbuster, the Tampa Bay Rays acquired two prospects for left-handed pitcher Scott Kazmir, reports Buster Olney of ESPN.com.
The prospects were P
Alexander Torres and 3B
Matt Sweeney, and the Rays will also receive a player to be named later.
Torres spent most of the season in the hitter friendly California League, where he had a 10-3 record and a 2.74 ERA, before a recent promotion to Double-A, where he made 5 starts, going 3-1 with a 2.77 ERA. The 21-year-old Venezuelan has always been able to miss bats (149 K's in 147 1/3 IP this season) despite his diminutive stature (he's listed as 5'10").
Sweeney is a left-handed hitting 3B with a career line of .285/.361/.492. He missed all of 2008 with an ankle injury, but has bounced back nicely in 2009 to the tune of .299/.379/.517.
